Festival “Performing Exils”: Resisting the Forces of Death
The 2nd “Performing Exiles” festival begins at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele with two visually powerful performances from Iran and Greece
One couldn't blame Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof for his words catching in his throat on Thursday evening. At the opening of the "Performing Exiles" festival, he stood in front of the side stage at the Haus derBerliner Festspiele and swallowed hard. War has been raging in his homeland for days, and warnings from America are coming in that all residents should leave the Iranian capital as quickly as possible. Although Rasoulof himself hasn't lived there for a year, he recalled all the friends, colleagues, indeed the entire host of those who have fought for democracy with the greatest courage for years and are now in grave danger. That this number is large has been known, at least since the 2022 protests, which became a beacon of hope in the region under the slogan "Women, Life, Freedom."
